    The hepta-β-glucoside elicitor-binding proteins from legumes represent a putative receptor family

    The ability of legumes to recognize and respond to β-glucan elicitors by synthesizing phytoalexins is consistent with the existence of a membrane-bound β-glucan-binding site. Related proteins of approximately 75 kDa and the corresponding mRNAs were detected in various species of legumes which respond to beta-glucans. The cDNAs for the beta-glucan-binding proteins of bean and soybean were cloned. The deduced 75-kDa proteins are predominantly hydrophilic and constitute a unique class of glucan-binding proteins with no currently recognizable functional domains. Heterologous expression of the soybean beta-glucan-binding protein in tomato cells resulted in the generation of a high-affinity binding site for the elicitor-active hepta-β-glucoside conjugate (K-d = 4.5 nM). Ligand competition experiments with the recombinant binding sites demonstrated similar ligand specificities when compared with soybean. In both soybean and transgenic tomato, membrane-bound, active forms of the glucan-binding proteins coexist with immunologically detectable, soluble but inactive forms of the proteins. Reconstitution of a soluble protein fraction into lipid vesicles regained beta-glucoside-binding activity but with lower affinity (K-d = 130 nM). We conclude that the beta-glucan elicitor receptors of legumes are composed of the 75 kDa glucan-binding proteins as the critical components for ligand-recognition, and of an as yet unknown membrane anchor constituting the plasma membrane-associated receptor complex

    The analysis of Polyakov loop and spin correlators in finite volumes

    We derive an analytic expression for point to point correlation functions of the Polyakov loop based on the transfer matrix formalism. The contributions from the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix including and beyond the mass gap are investigated both for the 2d2d Ising model and in finite temperature SU(2)SU(2) gauge theory. We find that the leading matrix element shows similar scaling properties in both models. Just above the critical point we obtain for SU(2)SU(2) a Debye screening mass  μD/T≈4 ~\mu_D/T\approx4~, independent of the volume.     When I reflect upon my vision for leading a school, I see a holistic nature to the areas of climate, shared decision making, community collaboration, and educational programming. These areas overlap one another as they provide the foundation on which I will lead. Community collaboration involves shared decision making, and shared decision making impacts climate. Educational programming, as I have described it, involves all of these areas. I feel what connects everything are the principles of relationships, resources, and relevancy. I believe the keys to success as a leader will be dependent upon the ability to create and nurture relationships, identify and utilize resources, and establish and maintain relevancy in what we do as a school

    Interference in interacting quantum dots with spin

    We study spectral and transport properties of interacting quantum dots with spin. Two particular model systems are investigated: Lateral multilevel and two parallel quantum dots. In both cases different paths through the system can give rise to interference. We demonstrate that this strengthens the multilevel Kondo effect for which a simple two-stage mechanism is proposed. In parallel dots we show under which conditions the peak of an interference-induced orbital Kondo effect can be split.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Properties of the non-Gaussian fixed point in 4D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory

    We examine selected properties of the gauge-ball spectrum and fermionic variables in the vicinity of the recently discussed non-Gaussian fixed point of 4D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory within the quenched approximation. Approaching the critical point from within the confinement phase, our data support scaling of T1+−T1^{+-} gauge-ball states in units of the string tension square root. The analysis of the chiral condensate within the framework of a scaling form for the equation of state suggests non mean-field values for the magnetic exponents δ\delta and βexp\beta_{exp}.Comment: 73K postscript fil

    We present evidence about a critical behavior of 4D4D compact QED (CQED) pure gauge theory.
